Special Care Dentistry: a series of challenges and opportunities

The BSSCD would like to welcome you to the Spring conference at the East Midlands Conference Centre and sustainably built  Orchard Hotel in the grounds of Nottingham University. The conference will explore the challenges and the opportunities frequently encountered in Special Care Dentistry.

This year, we are very lucky to be joined by 'Our Dementia Choir' to sing for us before the dinner'!

Aims: 

To provide an overview of the challenges and opportunities encountered in Special Care Dentistry.

To provide an opportunity for selected authors of BSSCD clinical and audit prizes to present their work to the BSSCD Spring Conference.


CPD: 
 

Day One - five hours and 30 minutes CPD.

Day Two - five hours and 30 minutes CPD.

GDC development outcomes for A and C 'effective communication' and  'maintenance and development of knowledge and skill within your field of practice'.


Learning Content:
 Two days of lectures provided by expert clinicians.


Objectives:
 

Day One: 
At the end of this session, the participant will
  • Have heard from prize presentation speakers on a range of clinical scenarios and audit
  • Considered the challenges and opportunities that the dental team encounters in offering dental services to people with Special Needs in Hospital and Community Settings
  • Understand some of the challenges and opportunities that are encountered by Specialty Trainees in Special Care Dentistry 
  • Be made aware of the complexities of managing the frail, elderly patient with multiple morbidities in a dental setting
  • Understand the challenges of ensuring quality dental treatment for care home residents when trying to balance procurement services with financial limitations
Day Two:
At the end of this session, the participant will
  • Be updated in the use of Conscious Sedation Techniques for Special Care Dentistry
  • Will gain a brief understanding of how the following psychological techniques can be used to help dental patients with Special Needs: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Acceptance and Commitment therapy (ACT)
  • Gain some understanding of the challenges faced by an individual patient with Physical and Learning Disabilities in accessing quality dental treatment
  • Be provided with some helpful information as to how to manage patients with a learning disability in a dental setting
  • Be provided with information and as to using alternative communication techniques for people with learning disabilities
  • Receive some learning from a case study of a complex patient with mental and physical disabilities who required dental treatment general anaesthetic

Annual Conference Dinner:

We are very lucky to be joined by 'Our Dementia Choir' to sing for us before the dinner'!

The conference dinner will be held on Thursday 4 May at the conference venue.

The fee of £55 includes a three course dinner with wine, followed by coffee/tea. (Non alcoholic alternatives will be available.)

Please be aware that places are limited!
