AN UPDATE ON COVID AND THE IMPLICATIONS MOVING FORWARD

Dr Jimstan Periselneris

Jimstan is a Consultant in respiratory and general medicine at King’s College Hospital, London, UK, with an interest in respiratory infection and respiratory complications of immunocompromised hosts and haemato-oncological disease. He completed his postgraduate higher specialist training in South London, during which he was awarded a MRC Clinical Training Fellowship to investigate the host-pathogen interaction of Streptococcus pneumoniae, leading to the award of a PhD from UCL. Additionally he completed further training in HIV and TB in South Africa and subsequently completed a post CCT fellowship in respiratory fungal disease at the Royal Brompton Hospital. He has an interest in medical education, with a role in the stage 2 undergraduate medicine course at KCL, is the training programme director for Internal Medicine and RCP College tutor at King’s College Hospital.

During this presentation Jimstan will:

  • Discuss airway assessment and its relevance in terms of when to seek anaesthetic advice for more complex sedation cases / GA advice
  • Explain the relevance of monitoring and when capnography is recommended including relevant guidelines
  • Explain which diseases we need to be concerned about such as sleep apnoea
  • Explain the risk / benefit of various drugs
  • Explain the relevance of special tests such as lung function tests

Oral Health Promoter

 

Zoe is an Oral Health Promoter for King’s College NHS Foundation Trust, where she has two roles within the team, one as lead for resource development and the other delivering oral health promotion across the life course in Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham.  She began her career as a Dental Nurse at King’s working for many years in Paediatric Dentistry, before moving into Oral Health Promotion. Zoe also worked as a Cancer Screening Health Improvement Practitioner for Lewisham Public Health, before having a few years out of the NHS whilst raising her three boys. She returned to Oral Health two years ago; she loves working in the community. Currently Zoe is studying an APM Level 4 Project Management Qualification through an apprenticeship with King’s. She hopes this will be useful in her oral health role as well as the work she carries out as a Dental Care Group Well Being Champion. Work and family life keep Zoe pretty busy, but if she does get any time to herself, she likes to indulge in yoga and crocheting. 

During this presentation Zoe will:

  • Describe her work role and the experience of having Covid 
  • Experience of working from home and managing staff



 

STAFF WELLBEING: IMPACT OF REDELOYMENT AND REINTEGRATION OF THE TEAM INTO WORK

Dr Sam Spedding

Sam Spedding is a counselling psychologist and clinical lead in the Dental Psychology Team at King's College Hospital, a service which provides psychological support for patients across dental and oral pathways relating to pain, dental anxiety, psychological trauma and appearance-related issues. He was previously the clinical lead in eating disorders at West London Trust, where he developed a pathway for patients meeting criteria for eating disorders and personality disorders and developed a dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) treatment for binge eating. He is a DBT therapist and has taught mindfulness to staff and patients in a variety of clinical settings. He is also an associate lecturer on the doctoral programme in counselling psychology at the University of East London. 

 

 

Dr Nicola Taylor

Principal Clinical Psychologist
Dental Psychology Service, King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

Nicola has worked in the NHS in a variety of clinical and research roles for nearly 20 years.  She completed her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Birmingham in 2009 and has since worked in the area of clinical health psychology.  She worked initially in an oncology and palliative care service in Northwest London before running a clinical health psychology Service in Waltham Forest and also leading a pilot psychology service within an orthognathics service at a local hospital.  Since joining King’s College Hospital in 2018, she has worked in the Dental Psychology Service.  On returning from maternity leave this January she has also been involved in providing staff support and setting up the Dental Wellbeing Group, developing resources and providing staff training.  She has a postgraduate diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and, having a specialist interest in trauma, is currently working towards accreditation in Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. 

 

During this presentation Sam and Nicola will:

  • Staff wellbeing – why it is important and barriers to accessing support
  • Psychological responses during Covid-19 phases
  • Factors influencing wellbeing during the pandemic including ‘at risk’ groups
  • Staff experiences of redeployment and returning to services
  • What King’s Dental Care Group has been doing to support staff wellbeing

 




SAFE SEDATION, AIRWAY MANAGEMENT AND ANAESTHESIA FOR PATIENTS WITH RESPIRATORY DISEASE 

Dr Oliver Long
MBChB FRCA

Consultant Anaesthetist,  with an interest in Special Care Dentistry, and a Site Medical Director
King's College Hospital

Oliver trained at the University of Manchester and after a year of working in Blackburn moved to London.  He completed junior doctor jobs in Medicine, A&E and Paediatrics before starting training in Anaesthetics, working in several hospitals in South London.  Oliver was appointed as a Consultant in Croydon University Hospital and was made Anaesthetic Lead there before taking a consultant position at King's College Hospital.  He was appointed Clinical Director for Anaesthetics in 2017 and subsequently Site Medical Director in 2020.  Oliver work closely with King's international partners as well as the procurement department and have a role in medication safety in the hospital. 

During this presentation Oliver will:

UPDATE ON SPECIAL CARE DENTISTRY EXAMINATIONS

Carole is the Interim Chair for the MSCD, Chair of the Speciality Advisory Board for SCD and a member of Dental Council Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

During this presentation Carole will: 

  • Describe the format of the Tri collegiate Examination in Special Care Dentistry
  • Give an update on the GDC curriculum in Special Care Dentistry



 

THE MANAGEMENT OF PATIENTS WITH NEUROMUSCULAR DISEASE RELATED RESPIRATORY DISORDERS, OBSTRUCTIVE AIRWAY DISEASE INCLUDING OBESITY RELATED RESPIRATORY FAILURE 

Dr Eui-Sik Suh
Consultant in Respiratory and Ventilation Medicine
St Thomas' Hospital, London

 

Eui-Sik is a Consultant in Respiratory and Ventilation Medicine at the Lane Fox Respiratory Service, St Thomas' Hospital, London. He is also an Honorary Senior Lecturer in medical education in the Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine at King's College London. He completed an undergraduate degree in chemistry at the University of Oxford prior to embarking on medical studies at University College London. He completed his specialist training in Respiratory Medicine in London. He was awarded a PhD in Clinical Respiratory Physiology by King's College London for research into respiratory muscle physiology during exacerbations of COPD. His research interests remain in COPD exacerbation physiology and chronic respiratory failure.

During this presentation Eui-Sik will:

  • Describe neuromuscular disorder related respiratory disorders
  • Outline the pathophysiology of respiratory failure
  • Describe specific management issues such as oral secretion clearance
  • Explain the physiology of small airway disease and how to manage patients in ventilatory failure including those undergoing sedation
  • Discuss how to manage patients with obesity related respiratory failure and discuss the preparation of patients prior to surgery 
  • Describe cases with joint anaesthetic input 

 




 

ORAL MANIFESTATIONS OF RESPIRATORY DISEASE AND ITS MANAGEMENT

Dr Shahid Chaudhry
PhD MBBS FRCP BDS FDSRCS FDS (OM) RCS (Eng) FHEA

Consultant in Oral Medicine 
King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

Shahid qualified in dentistry at UMDS, London before completing his medical degree at ICSM at St Mary’s Hospital, London. He has had broad general professional training in both dental and medical specialties, including Genito-urinary / HIV medicine and Dermatology at the St John’s Institute of Dermatology. He undertook specialist training in Oral Medicine at University College London Hospital NHS Trust as well as a CR-UK Clinical Research Training Fellowship to support a PhD thesis in cancer cell biology at the London Research Institute. Prior to taking up his current position, he was a Senior Clinical Lecturer / Honorary Consultant at Queen Mary’s University, London and was involved in the development of the Behçet’s Syndrome Centres of Excellence.  His area of special interest is medicine in relation to oral disease, oral pre-cancer and cancer., with research interest in inflammatory mucosal disease, epithelial-mesenchymal transition, epithelial dysplasia and squamous cell carcinoma. Shahid has published over 80 peer reviewed articles with over 1,500 citations in a variety of medical, dental and scientific journals.

During this presentation Shahid will:

  • Explain how different respiratory diseases can affect the oral cavity
  • Explain how the management of respiratory diseases / drugs can affect the oral cavity
  • Describe when to refer
  • Explain how to manage / treat symptoms   
  • Discuss case studies

 




 

UPATE ON MANAGING THE ASTHMATIC PATIENT

Dr Joanne Kavanagh

Joanne completed her medical degree at the University of Sheffield and went on to complete her specialist respiratory training in South London. She has a diploma in clinical education and has a specialist interest in severe asthma, having completed a two-year clinical research fellowship at Guys severe asthma centre.

During this presentation Joanne will:

  • Provide a brief overview of asthma, detailing the relevant anatomy and physiology, and the difference between asthma, severe asthma and difficult to treat asthma.
  • Explain how asthma services are currently organised in the UK
  • Outline current asthma management in primary and secondary care 
  • Provide an overview of tertiary care for asthma, including new biologic therapies and the role of the multi-disciplinary team in managing asthma and associated co-morbidities
  • Discuss the side-effects / complications of asthma treatment and how this might impact on dental treatment 
  • Explain the impact of the pandemic on asthma patients and services
