Omar Mustafa

Omar's Biography

Dr Mustafa is a consultant physician in diabetes, and general internal medicine based at King's College Hospital in London. He completed his undergraduate medical training in Iraq and his postgraduate training in the UK.

He is also honorary senior clinical lecturer at King’s College London and site lead for the quality improvement and evidence-based practice module.

Omar's interests include health professions and medical education, and he obtained a master’s in health professions education from Maastricht University/Suez Canal University. He is currently, training programme director for the endocrinology and diabetes higher specialist training programme, and Omar also co-chairs the Simulation Faculty at King’s College Hospital. He is a member of the RCP Speciality Advisory Committee.

provide information about the new technologies that are being used in the management of people living with diabetes and enable delegates to consider how these technologies may enhance patient management.

Geraldine's Biography
Geraldine Gallen is a Senior Diabetes Specialist Nurse, currently working at Kings College Hospital, London. She has been in this position for over ten years and is the lead for the Type 1 diabetes service. Geraldine’s main clinical interest is in the management and education of all patients with Type 1 diabetes including those patients experiencing problematic hypoglycaemia, and along with the team at Kings offers a full range of treatments including structured education, DAFNE and DAFNE for pumpers, technology including insulin pump therapy, sensor augmented pump therapy, automated closed loop systems, continuous glucose monitoring and flash glucose monitoring. She and her team have over 800 patients on insulin pumps and over 170 patients funded on full time continuous glucose monitoring. Geraldine has also had training in Cognitive Behavioural therapy (CBT) and Motivational Interviewing (MI) and is interested in developing these skills further and supporting patients in their holistic management with their diabetes.Geraldine is excited by the developments of technology within type 1 diabetes management and can often be found talking to patients and healthcare professionals nationally and internationally educating how technology can be adapted into the patient pathway.

A teaching session using case studies as a means to educate the delegate

- The person who attends for an appointment with diabetes type 2 who appears to be disorientated.
- A person with diabetes (stable glycaemia and meds) who requires dental extraction
- A person with anxiety with unstable blood glucose who requires dental treatment
- A person with ketoacidosis
- A person with diabetes undergoing a dental clearance under GA

Dominika's Biography

Dominika's Biography
Dominika is a dentist and person living with Type 1 Diabetes, working in private dental practice. She graduated from Medical University of Warsaw (2018), King’s College London (2019), Swansea University (2021). She was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in 2018, only two weeks after graduating from dental school. Her research interests focuses on exploring relationship between oral health and diabetes. During her time at Swansea while completing MSc in Diabetes Practice her dissertation explored oral health behaviours among people with diabetes. Endocrinology is a clinical speciality that manages diseases of the endocrine system. The endocrine system involves the hormone-releasing glands. These include the pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal and thyroid glands as well as the pancreas, ovaries and testicles. Jessica's talk will provide a broad overview of:

Acromegaly
Thyroid disease
Phaecromocytoma

And consider how these conditions may impact the delivery of dental care.

15:00 - STEROIDS: WHAT ARE THEY AND WHY ARE THEY SO IMPORTANT FOR DENTISTS TO UNDERSTAND

Provide information for the dental team regarding primary adrenal failure and steroid medication causing adrenal insufficiency and how these may impact the delivery of dental care. In view of recent National Guidelines and Patient Safety Alerts

Adrenal insufficiency is common, and frequently it is present in an unrecognized form. These patients are at risk of potentially fatal adrenal crisis, which is also an under-recognized condition. Understanding this clinical challenge and managing it with supplemental steroids is part of a major patient safety initiative over the past 5 years.
